Tracy, Senior Business Travel Consultant, joined Good Travel Management five years ago. Her role involves quoting and booking flights, hotels, care hire, train travel and everything in between!
Here, Tracy takes us through her entry into the corporate travel sector, sharing what inspired her along the way and lots more…
How did you first get into the corporate travel industry?
I commenced my career in travel in the world of retail, where I spent two decades honing my skills and building my knowledge base. The experience was invaluable, providing me with insights into the nuances of travel planning, customer service, and the intricacies of the industry.
As my career evolved, I found myself facing a need to balance work with childcare responsibilities. I embarked on a search for a role that would accommodate this important aspect of my life, and corporate travel emerged as the perfect solution. It offered a schedule that aligned seamlessly with my childcare needs, and it didn’t require working weekends.
My journey in the corporate travel industry commenced at a different corporate travel company, where I gained further experience and expertise. I spent 11 years there before joining the remarkable team at Good Travel Management.
What has inspired you in your career?
The initial inspiration for my career in travel was the allure of discounted travel opportunities. The prospect of exploring new destinations and experiencing the world’s wonders at a reduced cost was undeniably appealing. However, over time, my motivations expanded beyond these personal benefits.
What has continued to inspire me through my career is the ever-evolving nature of the industry. Travel is not static, and I’ve found joy in adapting to its changes, learning new aspects of the business, and staying up to date with industry developments.
What are the biggest challenges in your role?
One of the significant challenges in my role as a corporate travel professional is navigating flight cancellations and disruptions. These disruptions can be triggered by a range of factors, including strikes, unexpected global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and even natural phenomena like volcanic ash clouds. Each of these events requires quick thinking, adaptability, and the ability to provide clients with solutions and support during these challenging times.
What skills have been the most crucial to you succeeding in the corporate travel industry so far?
For me, the skills that have been the most crucial are learning the flight booking system but also having good geography knowledge. Knowing the best airline routes is also very important.
What education or training would be most useful for someone looking to follow your career path?
As previously mentioned, I think geography is great to have and would be useful for someone looking to follow my career path. I also think familiarising yourself with software such as reservations systems, portals and other tools we use for the job would give someone a great head start.
What advice would you give to someone looking to follow your career path?
It is definitely an interesting career! No day is the same and you will never be bored but be aware that there are always a few challenges to overcome.
