Liam started his journey at Good Travel Management recently as a Business Travel Apprentice. His role involves quoting prices for rail tickets, hotels and other forms of travel. Liam is still new to the industry but he gives us a sneak peek into his journey so far and what he has learnt.
How did you first get into the Corporate Travel industry?
My initiation into the corporate travel industry was not through a formal education programme or a predefined career path. Instead, I got my foot in the door by undertaking a work experience opportunity at Good Travel Management. It was during this time that I first glimpsed the intricate world of corporate travel, and my passion for it began to take shape.
The work experience period was a revelation. I was exposed to the day-to-day operations, the interactions with clients, and the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into making our corporate travel seamless. It was an eye-opener, and I knew that I had found my calling.
What has inspired your career?
One of the key motivators in my journey has been the inspiration I drew from my colleagues. The wealth of knowledge and wisdom they shared with me during my work experience was invaluable. It was through their mentorship and guidance that I felt compelled to take the next step, which was to apply for an apprenticeship with the business.
The seasoned professionals I worked with not only demonstrated expertise in the field but also showcased the dedication and passion required to excel in the corporate travel industry. They were living proof that success in this dynamic world was achievable, and their enthusiasm was infectious.
What are the biggest challenges in your role?
As an apprentice, I am currently facing the challenge of ensuring that I pass my apprenticeship with flying colours. This means taking on every task with the utmost diligence and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. The world of corporate travel is ever evolving, and to succeed in it, I need to constantly expand my horizons and learn new skills.
What skills have been the most crucial to your success in the Corporate Travel industry so far?
In my journey so far, I have found that two skills are crucial for succeeding in the corporate travel industry; knowledge of the industry and a genuine passion for travel. Understanding the intricacies, trends and best practices in corporate travel is essential. However, it’s the unwavering passion for exploring the world that fuels the dedication to excel in this field.
What education or training would be most useful for someone looking to follow your career path?
I am a strong advocate for apprenticeships, especially for those who are just leaving school and are embarking on their careers. Learning on the job has proven to be incredibly useful for me. It offers a hands-on, real-world experience that is hard to replicate in a classroom. Being able to apply theoretical knowledge directly to practical situations has been instrumental in my growth.
What advice would you give to someone looking to follow your career path?
To those considering a career in the corporate travel industry, I would say this; if you have a passion for travel and have been thinking about pursuing a career in this industry, then don’t hesitate. Follow your dream, as I did. The corporate travel world is a dynamic, exciting, and rewarding one, and if it’s your passion, you’re bound to find fulfilment and success along the way.
My journey into the corporate travel industry, from work experience to becoming a Business Travel Apprentice, is a testament to the value of following one’s passion and being open to learning and growth. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and look forward to embracing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
